Milford Sound / Piopiotahi should certainly be a must do on your South Island itinerary.

We can almost guarantee you will be in awe of this area, with its remote location and breathtaking beauty. While this area is a hotspot for tourists, if you venture just a little further on the beaten track, you'll find some of Fiordland's most remarkable spots, often overlooked. We've highlighted a few of these hidden gems, perfect for curious travelers looking to experience the quieter, wilder side of the region.

1. Lake Marian Track

High in the mountains above the Hollyford Valley, Lake Marian is a spectacular alpine lake surrounded by snow-capped peaks. The 3-hour return hike starts near the Marian Falls bridge and leads through lush rainforest before opening up to this glacial-blue lake that feels like something out of a dream.

2. Gertrude Saddle (For experienced hikers)

Are you an experienced hiker looking for a challenging day hike? In that case, the Gertrude Saddle Route offers dramatic alpine views of the valley leading down to Milford Sound. The trail is unmarked in some areas and traverses steep, rocky terrain. Still, those who make the effort are rewarded with jaw-dropping panoramas over the Darran Mountains. *Warning: wet weather, snow or ice create treacherous conditions in any season.

3. Humboldts & Lake Howden (via Routeburn Track)

You don't need to hike the full Routeburn Track to enjoy it. A day trip from the Divide end (on the Milford Road) to Lake Howden or the Key Summit lookout offers incredible views over the Humboldt Mountains and alpine wetlands. It's one of the best short walks in the region, and it starts right on the Milford Highway.

4. The Chasm (A quick stop)

Just 10 minutes from Milford Sound, The Chasm is a short loop walk to a dramatic series of waterfalls and rock formations carved by the Cleddau River. It's a quick stop, but the power of the water and the sculpted rock formations are worth checking out.

5. Lake Gunn Nature Walk

One of Fiordland's best short walks starts from the Cascade Creek carpark on Milford Road. Wander through this 1.4-kilometre loop and see the red beech forest, surrounded by mountains. You'll be able to spot some native birds like the South Island robin, kākā, and yellowhead. There is a short path that leads to a stony beach. Make sure to stop here to get a photo of the lake.

Our Pro Tip:

Many of these hidden gems along the Milford Road are considered a scenic flight or guided tour that allows time for stops along the way. Self-driving? Allow yourself a full day to explore, as this area is full of surprises, including lookouts, rivers, and alpine vistas.
