1972
Challenge Rafting
Danes Shotover Rafts was established in 1972. The Raging Thunder brand was used for a short period in the mid 90’s and became Challenge Rafting in 1996. By the late 1980s, rafting was one of Queenstown’s top paid attractions for international visitors. As rafting became more popular, so did the need for formal regulation and safety standards and Queenstown operators built strong reputations for professionalism. Queenstown rafting companies have focused heavily on sustainability and river conservation working with local authorities to maintain river ecosystems.
1978
Harris Mountains Heli-Ski
Paul Scaife started his own heli-ski operation in New Zealand after experience heli-ski in Canada. It soon became the largest heli-ski operation outside of North America.
1986
The Helicopter Line
The Helicopter Line was listed on the New Zealand Stock Exchange in 1986.
1996
Mitre Peak Cruises
In 1996, the company started with one boat, Ariki Tai, a salt house design out of Havelock. They operated one boat until MP1 was commissioned in 2000. MP2 was commissioned in 2005. Passenger numbers grew on average 50% that year.

Glacier Helicopters
Glacier Helicoptrs was incorporated in August 1980.
1999
Totally Tourism
Totally Tourism was founded in June 1999.
2013
Arrival of new generation Gippsland GA8 Airvans.
Milford Sound Flights’ new Airvan passed through its ‘crossing of the guard’ at Queenstown Airport on 30 April 2013 following its first passenger flight.
