The Best Way to Get to Milford Sound / Piopiotahi
Milford Sound is one of Aotearoa New Zealand’s most spectacular natural wonders.
The fiord is home to cascading waterfalls, towering cliffs, and pristine rainforest. So, what's the best way to get there? You’ve got two main options: drive or fly. Here’s what you need to know.
Drive Yourself to Milford Sound
The drive from Queenstown takes between 4 and 5 hours each way, with a return distance of about 600 kilometres. It’s a scenic journey, especially the section between Te Anau and Milford Sound. Our favourite stops include Eglinton Valley, Mirror Lakes, and Monkey Creek.
Pros:
- Great for those who enjoy road trips and have time to stop at scenic points.
- More flexible schedule if you’re self-driving.
Cons:
- Long day, up to 10 hours return.
- Winding alpine roads and limited cell service.
- Be aware of road disruptions, especially in winter.
Fly to Milford Sound
Flying is the fastest and most spectacular way to reach Milford. With Milford Sound Scenic Flights or The Helicopter Line, you’ll soar over Fiordland’s dramatic landscapes and land in the heart of the fiord. The views of the Southern Alps into Fiordland from above are unbeatable.
Pros:
- Epic views of glaciers, mountains, and remote valleys.
- Save time. The return trips take just 4-5 hours, including a cruise through the fiord.
- Enjoy an alpine or glacier landing with a helicopter flight.
Cons:
- Not budget-friendly for everyone.
- Flights are weather-dependent and can be cancelled at short notice.
- Miss out on the scenic drive of the Milford Road.
Still can’t decide? You don’t have to.
Many tour operators offer a coach cruise and fly back option. You can enjoy the views of the Milford Road, cruise through the fiord, and take in the scenic flight on the way back from Queenstown. Book a Coach Cruise Heli with The Helicopter Line and Mitre Peak Cruises or Coach Cruise Fly with Milford Sound Scenic Flights.
