Meet Bob
Part of the team at the The Helicopter Line for over 40 years.
For more than four decades, Bob Lindsay has been a constant presence in The Helicopter Line family. A name synonymous with loyalty, experience, and an enduring passion for aviation.
Joining the company in 1984, Bob quickly became a cornerstone of Queenstown’s helicopter operations, earning immense respect from colleagues, pilots, and passengers alike. His story is one of perseverance, skill, and deep connection to both the people and the place that shaped his remarkable career.
Bob’s love of flying began young. Growing up on a family farm near Luggate, he was captivated by the sight of helicopters belonging to Sir Tim Wallis, one of New Zealand’s pioneering aviators. What started as a fascination soon became a calling. After training in Nelson, Bob earned his helicopter license in 1979, beginning a lifelong journey in aviation that would take him across Australia and back home to Queenstown.
When Bob joined Alpine Helicopters, when it was changing to The Helicopter Line, in November 1984, he brought with him both technical skill and genuine humility. Over the next 28 years, he logged more than 15,000 flight hours and took on key roles, including Pilot Manager for the company’s scenic division. He performed hundreds of rescue missions, often in challenging alpine conditions, and was known for his calm under pressure and unwavering dedication to safety.
His flying career was filled with memorable moments. From supporting film productions like Willow to transporting prime ministers and presidents. In the 1990s, Bob set a world record that still stands today: 1,356 helicopter flights for AJ Hackett’s heli-bungy operation.
Even after his flying career was unexpectedly cut short, Bob’s commitment to The Helicopter Line never faltered. Returning as ground crew, he continues to play an invaluable role supporting operations and welcoming guests.
Mark Quickfall describes him as “always enthusiastic, always positive, absolutely reliable and loyal” qualities that have made Bob an integral part of the company’s story and culture.
Beyond aviation, Bob is a devoted family man. He and his wife Lorraine raised four children and now enjoy time with their ten grandchildren. The couple have called Kelvin Heights home since 1985, long before Queenstown’s growth turned it into one of the country’s most sought-after addresses.
After 40 years of service, Bob remains a true embodiment of The Helicopter Line’s spirit - dependable, humble, and deeply connected to both his team and his community. His contribution continues to lift those around him, a fitting legacy for someone who has spent a lifetime helping others rise above the mountains.
